INDIGENOUS STATUS OF PRISONERS

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners comprised just over a quarter (27% or 8,430) of the total prisoner population. The age standardised imprisonment rate for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander prisoners was 1,959 per 100,000 adult Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander population. This was 15 times higher than non-Indigenous prisoners for whom the age standardised imprisonment rate was 131 per 100,000 adult non-Indigenous population. (Tables 1 and 18)
