The following 18 tables contain historical data on marriages and divorces including: number of registrations; median age at marriage; age-specific marriage and divorce rates; crude marriage and divorce rates; and population by sex and marital status.

Table 88. Marriages registered, states and territories, 1825 onwards
Contains the number of marriages registered in each state and territory for the years 1825 to 2002.

Table 89. Median age at marriage by sex, states and territories, 1977 onwards
Contains the median age at marriage for never married and all marriages by sex for each state and territory for the years 1977 to 2002.

Table 90. Marriages, category of celebrant, states and territories, 1902 onwards
Contains marriages by category of celebrant (ministers of religion, civil celebrants and all celebrants) for each state and territory for the years 1902 to 2002.

Table 91. Age-specific marriage rates by sex, Australia, 1976 onwards
Contains age-specific marriage rates (the number of marriages per 1,000 unmarried male or female population aged 15 years and over in five-year age groups, 15-50 and over) by sex for Australia for the years 1976 to 2002.

Table 92. Crude marriage rates, states and territories, 1860 onwards
Contains crude marriage rates for state and territories for the years 1860 to 2002.

Contains age-specific divorce rates (the number of divorce per 1,000 married male or female population in five-year age groups, 24 and under to 60 and over) by sex for Australia for the years 1976 to 2002.

Contains the crude divorce rates for states and territories for the years 1901 to 2002.

Table 98. Population, sex and marital status, NSW, census years, 1851-1891
Contains population by sex and marital status for New South Wales for census years 1851, 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891. For 1851 the categories of marital status are single and married. For the census years of 1861, 1871, 1881 and 1891 the categories of marital status are never married (under 21 years for males and under 18 years for females), never married (21 years and over for males and 18 years and over for females), never married (all ages), married, widowed, divorced and total.

Contains population by sex and marital status for South Australia for census years 1861, 1866, 1871, 1876, 1881 and 1891. The categories of marital status are never married, married, widowed and total. Includes Northern Territory.

Contains population by sex and marital status for Western Australian for census years 1854, 1870, 1881 and 1891. The categories of marital status for 1854 are Single (under 21 years and 21 years and over), Married (under 21 years and 21 years and over) and Total. For 1870 they are Single, 15 years and over
Married, Widowed and total for all ages. For 1881 the categories are unmarried (under 15 years and 15 years and over and total for all ages), married, widowed and total. For 1891 the categories are never married (under 21 years and 21 years and over and total for all ages), married, widowed. divorced, not stated and total.
