This group covers R&D directed towards exploration for energy mineral and geothermal energy resources.
This group has six objectives:

    850101 Coal Exploration
    850102 Geothermal Exploration
    850103 Oil and Gas Exploration
    850104 Oil Shale and Tar Sands Exploration
    850105 Uranium Exploration
    850199 Energy Exploration not elsewhere classified

    Exclusions:
    a) Exploration for non-energy mineral resources is included in Group 8401 Mineral Exploration.
    b) Air quality; control of pests, diseases and exotic species; ecosystem assessment and management; flora, fauna and biodiversity; land and water management; rehabilitation of degraded areas; remnant vegetation and conservation areas; soils; and natural hazards in mining environments are included in Division 96 Environment.
