A NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR

Welcome to the latest newsletter from the National Migrant Statistics Unit (NMSU).

The field of migrant statistics continues to be a very busy one! In January 2009 the NMSU released the next edition of the popular Migrant Data Matrices (cat. no. 3415.0). The Matrices provide a one-stop-shop for visitors to the ABS website interested in migrants, drawing together relevant data from a wide range of ABS collections. The current edition incorporates all data cubes from the first edition as well as new information on births and marriages, plus data from the 2006 Census, 2007 Education and Work survey and other recent collections. A total of 38 collections are represented. The Matrices have been designed with ease of use in mind, with data searchable on both a topic and a collection basis. To further assist, the NMSU will shortly be releasing a 'How to' video providing instructions on using the Matrices. Further details are provided in this Newsletter.

Shortly after the release of this Newsletter, a new edition of the Perspectives on Migrants (cat. no. 3416.0) series will be released by the NMSU. While previous editions of Perspectives have utilised information on country of birth, language spoken and religion, the new edition focuses specifically on visa category. Four articles focusing on migrant flows and characteristics by visa type will be presented.

This edition of the Newsletter also includes information on important changes to the Migration, Australia (cat. no. 3412.0) publication, as well as a range of other news sure to be of interest.

As always, if you are interested in receiving further details about our work we would be pleased to hear from you. NMSU contact details are listed in the Newsletter. In the meantime - happy reading!
