This group covers R&D directed towards the development and provision of water and waste services and utilities to households and industrial and commercial premises.
It includes:

• management and recycling of wastes and waste products, including toxic, biological and radiological waste;
• provision of water services and utilities, including household supply;
• stormwater drainage and sewerage waste management and treatment;
• storage, recycling, purification (including desalination) and distribution of water;
• repair and maintenance of water related facilities; and
• operation of irrigation systems.

Exclusions:
a) Provision of energy services and utilities is included in Group 8506 Energy Storage, Distribution and Supply.
b) Industrial processing of wastes and scrap to manufacture new products is included in the appropriate groups in Division 86 Manufacturing.
c) Management of solid, liquid or gaseous waste generated as an integral process within an industry to minimise or prevent impacts on environment is included in respective industry divisions (e.g. Division 86 Manufacturing) and groups (e.g. Group 8698 Environmentally Sustainable Manufacturing).
d) Construction of dams, water mains and pumping stations is included in Group 8704 Construction Processes.
e) Management of environmental impacts from water and waste services is included in Group 9098 Environmentally Sustainable Commercial Services and Tourism.
