This publication presents estimates of the financial and economic performance of retail and wholesale businesses in Australia for 2012–13. The estimates are compiled from the Economic Activity Survey (EAS) conducted by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and from Business Activity Statement (BAS) data reported to the Australian Taxation Office (ATO).

The estimates in this publication are based on the Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 edition (cat. no. 1292.0). Estimates are available by ANZSIC Division, Subdivision, and also at Class level for selected items only. Key measures include employment, labour costs, income, expenses, profitability and industry value added. Summary data are also presented by business size and at the state and territories level.

The scope of this release has changed to exclude non-employing businesses whose turnover, in aggregate, is below the bottom 2.5 percentile of BAS sales for that ANZSIC Subdivision. Previous iterations of the survey had included micro non-employers. For further information on estimation methodology for this survey please see Technical Note: Estimation Methodology.

This is the first release of Retail and Wholesale Industries ( 8622.0) that does not include a Portable Document Format (PDF) component. All published data can be found within the attached data cubes under the Downloads tab above. See the separate sections below for more details about data cubes.

Tables contain key data at Subdivision level for the Retail and Wholesale Industries. Details include breakdowns of sales and services income, labour costs, expenditure on purchases, rent, leasing and hiring expenditure, inventories and operating profit before tax. For the Retail Industry, a split of online sales and other retail sales is available in the Retail Industry data cube Table 2.

Tables contain selected data items at a finer ANZSIC classification level. Details include employment, sales breakdown by Industry, total services income and other income, key expenditure data, operating profit before tax and industry value added.
