This division covers R&D directed towards the development, support and provision of information and communication services.
It includes:
- telecommunication services;
- computer programming or software services;
- library and library database services;
- presentation of educational displays for museums, art galleries and similar institutions;
- printing and publishing of books and newspapers; and
- environmental sustainability of information and communication services.
This division has six groups:
8901 Communication Networks and Services
8902 Computer Software and Services
8903 Information Services
8904 Media Services
8998 Environmentally Sustainable Information and Communication Services
8999 Other Information and Communication Services
Exclusions:
a) Management of energy consumption from information and communication services is included in Group 8507 Energy Conservation and Efficiency.
b) Development and manufacture of computer hardware, communication equipment and electronic equipment, including assembly of components, are included in Division 86 Manufacturing.
c) Installation of communications networks in buildings is included in Group 8705 Building Management and Services.
d) R&D directed towards computer programming or software services which is specific to other socio-economic objectives is included in other appropriate groups, e.g. video streaming software is included in Group 8904 Media Services.
e) Waste handling services such as collection, storage, recycling and disposal provided by local councils or private or non-profit waste management businesses are included in Group 9004 Water and Waste Services.
f) Cinemas or motion picture exhibition is included in Group 9099 Other Commercial Services and Tourism.
g) Music and theatre production mainly of a non-commercial nature is included in Group 9501 Arts and Leisure.
h) Social impacts of media services are included in Group 9502 Communication.
