I've been chosen to be in the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Survey – what is this?
This is an important national survey that collects up-to-date information about Australia and helps to measure the impact that Coronavirus (COVID-19) is continuing to have on peoples’ lives, including vital information for measuring the social and economic characteristics and wellbeing of Australians.

How is the information from this survey used and why is it important?
Your participation in this survey is an opportunity to make a real difference. Results are used by government agencies, researchers and other organisations in your community to plan and provide resources, programs and services to help people living in Australia.

By taking part, you can ensure that your experiences and circumstances become part of the story of life in Australia today. The information you provide will contribute to important decisions being made for your local area and the wider Australian community.

Why was I selected for this survey?
Last year, you participated in the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Survey. Your participation in the survey was critical to providing reliable indicators of the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the economic and social wellbeing of people in Australia.

The COVID-19 pandemic continues to impact Australian lives. It is vital that the ABS continues to produce reliable measures of this wide-spread impact, to help government agencies, researchers and other organisations in your community to plan and provide resources, programs and services to Australians.

For this reason, we are asking people who generously participated in the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Survey in 2021 to resume their role in the survey.

How do I complete the survey?
If you’ve been asked to complete the survey, an ABS Interviewer will call you each month to discuss your role in the survey. With your agreement, the interviewer will then complete the Wellbeing and Lifestyle Survey with you over the phone each month.

If your phone number has changed since the last time we contacted you, please call 1800 214 751 during business hours. We can update your contact details and record the most convenient time for an interviewer to contact you.

You must be aged 18 years or over to complete this survey.

What kinds of questions will you ask?
The survey asks a range of questions about the impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on your life, involvement in the community, employment and housing, and general health and wellbeing.
Similar questions will be asked each month to measure changes in your circumstances and the impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) over time, so while it may feel a little repetitive, it is very important that we capture whether there are any changes from month to month to ensure we are producing reliable statistics and measure changes in the community accurately.

Results are published each month and available free of charge for everyone on the ABS website in Household Impacts of COVID-19 Survey (cat no 4940.0).

How long will I be in the survey for?
You will be included in the survey once a month for up to 3 months. It is important the same person completes the survey each month as this allows us to measure any changes in your situation over time.

The information you give us is combined with other households to enable the ABS to produce reliable statistics and measure the social and economic impacts of Coronavirus (COVID-19) in Australia.

Do I have to complete the survey?
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) aims to collect the information in this survey with your cooperation. While you do not have to complete this survey, your participation will assist the ABS to produce reliable indicators of the impact of Coronavirus (COVID-19) on the economic and social wellbeing of people in Australia.

The questions included in this survey are being asked under the authority of the Census and Statistics Act 1905. The ABS is required by the Act to maintain the secrecy of all information provided to it. No information will be released in a way that would enable you to be identified.

Will I be paid for my time?
No. There is no provision within the Census and Statistics Act 1905 to reimburse people for the cost of providing statistical information. In line with other national statistical organisations throughout the world, individuals, businesses and other organisations are asked to supply information for statistical purposes without compensation. It is only with the support of people like you that we can continue to produce the statistics that inform Australia's important decisions.

How will you keep my information safe, secure and confidential?
We take the security of the information you provide to us very seriously. Your information remains strictly confidential to the ABS and is not shared with other agencies. We use the information you provide to calculate statistics, which are released in ways that do not allow for the identification of individuals or households.

All ABS employees have signed a legally enforceable Undertaking of Fidelity and Security in which they agree to keep any information, including personal information which they may deal with in the course of their work, private and confidential. This agreement applies to ABS employees for the rest of their lives, even if they leave the ABS. The penalty for breaching this is up to two years imprisonment, a $26,640 fine, or both.

We comply with the Australian Privacy Principles. The ABS will not disclose your personal information to any overseas entity or for compliance or regulatory uses. If you believe we have breached these principles, please see the information on how to lodge a complaint about privacy matters, contained within our privacy policy.
