ABS and Volunteering Queensland team up to promote the 2011 Census
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) and Volunteering Queensland (VQ) have teamed up to promote the Census of Population and Housing which will take place on Tuesday 9 August, 2011.
The ABS is sponsoring VQ’s Community Games at Logan tomorrow (Saturday 14 May) and will be at the event to promote Census Collectors job opportunities.
Timed to celebrate National Volunteering Week, the VQ Games are expected to attract hundreds of participants from a range of community and multicultural groups across South East Queensland.
Queensland Census Director, Sally Pritchard says 1,005 Census Collectors jobs are still available across the state.
“Queensland has endured so much this year, with floods and cyclones devastating the state. Any Queenslander who wants to give back to their community or just earn a bit of extra money can apply for Collector jobs. We need people to help out in all corners of the state,” Ms Pritchard says
Ms Pritchard says volunteers are the backbone of the state, but this time they can earn some money helping out their community.
“These Census Collector positions are perfect for people who want to help their neighbours, friends and community. Census jobs will make a real and positive contribution to rebuilding flood ravaged and cyclone hit towns and regions,” Ms Pritchard added.
The Census gives the ABS a snapshot of Australia. It provides important information to decision makers and communities to help plan for the future. Like the Census, volunteers make an enormous difference to Australia.
“The ABS thanks Volunteering Queensland for its support in promoting the Census and encouraging VQ members to apply for jobs as Census Collectors,” Ms Pritchard says.
The VQ Community Games will to be held at Mabel Park State High School from 9.30 am.
Census Collectors will be employed from 1 July to 8 September, and will earn between $1300 and $2800.
Applicant kits are available online at www.abs.gov.au/census or phone 1800 420 182.
