Sydney's Arabic speaking community throwing support behind the Census
The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) is looking for a record 8,200 Census Collectors in NSW to help conduct the Census on 9 August 2011.
Sydney's Arabic speaking community is showing strong support for this year's Census with many community members already in important roles and currently helping to promote Census Collector recruitment.
Fatima Kourouche joins the Census again this year as part of the Multicultural Strategy Team, having been an Area Supervisor in the past two Censuses.
"My role involves visiting diverse organisations to promote the Census and encouraging people from all communities, especially those with bilingual skills, to apply for Census Collector roles."
"Becoming a Census Collector is a great opportunity to actively participate in capturing Australia's diversity," says Ms Kourouche.
“Information collected in the Census is essential to identifying and providing targeted services to all cultural groups and their families.”
Victor Youssef, the President of The Egyptian Council of Australia was also recently appointed as an Area Supervisor in Bexley.
"I'm encouraging Egyptians who live in Australia and those within my local area to join in the Census. This is the perfect way to give something back to the community," Mr Youssef says.
“I see my role, and that of my team of Collectors, as helping the community to understand the importance of completing the Census form".
Census Collectors will receive between $1,300 and $2,800 for the casual position and will be employed from 1 July until 8 September.
Applications are open 9 April until 5 May 2011. Apply online at www.abs.gov.au/census or call 1800 420 182.
