Using Map View (Tutorial 6)

Introduction
Slide 1:
Welcome to the Creating & Viewing Maps tutorial for CDATA Online.

During this interactive tutorial you will be prompted to select a link, please use your mouse to select the appropriate link before moving onto the next screen.

You can pause, fast forward, rewind or stop the tutorial at any time.

Some buttons may not be visible if using Closed Captioning. To access these buttons please turn Closed Captioning on and off as needed.

To begin please select the "Creating & Viewing Maps" button on this screen.

Slide 2:
We are going to create a "Thematic Map" using a States by Age and Sex table. If you have previously created this table then it will be under the "My Tables" tab.

We will now view the tables geographic areas as a thematic map.

Click on the "Map View" tab.

"Map View" automatically opens the "Custom Map" pane on the left of screen and the "Map View" on the right.

The map has displayed the first data item in your table as the thematic layer for your selected geographical area.

Slide 6:
The map will display one thematic layer of data at a time, you can change which data you want to view using the drop down box below the "Select Data Layer".

Select the arrow at the end of the drop down box for more data options.

Slide 7:
Choose a new data layer to see your thematic map by selecting it from the drop down list. For this example select "Male: 15-19 years".

You can add and remove "Map Features" by selecting the tick boxes beside the feature options.

You can also change the "Distribution Method" by selecting the radio button next to your selection.

Change your "Data Range" by selecting the number of ranges using the drop down list.

"Change colours" for thematic levels by selecting the drop down box.

You can select the "Auto" box next to the "Update Map" button to automatically update your Map after each selection, or you can select on the "Update Map" button to apply changes when you are ready.

Select "Update Map" now.

Slide 13:
There are a number of tools available to navigate around your map. The "Zoom In" tool to magnify your map.

The "Zoom Out" tool to de-magnify your map.

Slide 15:
The "Pan" or "Hand" tool to move around your map.

Slide 16:
The "Information Tool" for more information about your map.

Slide 17:
and the "thematic tool" to change layers. Play with these tools and see what they do.

Slide 18:
Scrolling back up to the top of the screen you can download your map as an "Adobe Acrobat" file or "Portable Network Graphics" file.

Slide 19:
Select "Adobe Acrobat" file type from the drop down list.

Slide 20:
Select the "Go" button.

Slide 21:
If you have Adobe Reader installed on your computer, then you may simply "open" the file.

Or save the file to a location of your choice. Please NOTE: A map cannot be saved to CDATA Online. You will need to use the table to create the map again in any future session.

In this case click on the "Open" button to see your map.
