ABOUT THESE STATISTICS

Due to the recent identification of under reporting to the Australian Bureau of Statistics of birth registrations in the State of Victoria and subsequent receipt of additional records from the Victorian Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages, the release of Australian Demographic Statistics, December Quarter 2007 (cat. no. 3101.0) has been deferred until 24 June 2008.

This release provides population estimates for the states and territories at 31 December 2007 and other summary statistics. Additional details for states and territories other than Victoria, and for Victoria for periods up to and including December quarter 2006, are available on request. There may be minor revisions to the estimates for 31 December 2007 in Australian Demographic Statistics, December Quarter 2007 (cat. no. 3101.0).

Population estimates for 30 June 2006 are based on the 2006 Census of Population and Housing and are now final, see feature article Final Rebasing And Revisions Of Australia's Population Estimates, September Quarter 2001 – June Quarter 2006 in this release.
