Adelaide Housing Costs Amongst Lowest in Australia

Of the 69 mainly urban regions across Australia, Adelaide had some of the lowest housing costs, according to a report released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).

Western Adelaide (Statistical Sub-Division, or SSD) had the lowest median rent in Australia of $114 per week; while Northern Adelaide (SSD) was third lowest with $117 per week. Northern Adelaide (SSD) also had the lowest median weekly mortgage repayment in Australia ($163 per week), with Southern Adelaide (SSD) fourth lowest at $176.

The report used results from the 2001 Census of Population and Housing to describe the major differences in the socio-demographic characteristics of people living in different parts of Australia.

Some major findings of the report relating to South Australia include:
  • South Australia's population has the highest median age (38 years) of any state or territory. Yorke and Lower North (Statistical Division, or SD) had the oldest population of all regions in this report, with a median age of 43 years. Over 19% of its residents were 65 years and older, compared to 13% for Australia as a whole.
  • Reflecting the older population, almost one-third of households in Western Adelaide (SSD) were lone person households, well above the Australian average of 24%.
  • Of regions within Adelaide, Northern Adelaide (SSD) had the highest proportion of couple families with dependent children (37%), while the South East (SD) region outside Adelaide was slightly higher (39%).
  • Mixed urban/rural regions in South Australia were home to some of the highest proportions of people reporting German ancestry in Australia, including Murray Lands (SD) (15%), Outer Adelaide (SD) (13%) and Yorke and Lower North (SD) (10%). This ancestry was also reflected in Murray Lands (SD) and Outer Adelaide (SD) also having the highest proportions of people reporting an affiliation to the Lutheran church (16% and 12% respectively).

Further information is in Census of Population and Housing: Australia in Profile - A Regional Analysis (cat. no. 2032.0).

Media Note: The report was based on ABS geographical areas called Statistical Divisions (SDs). However, to give more evenly sized regions, SDs in populous areas have generally been disaggregated to Statistical Sub-Divisions (SSDs) or Statistical Region Sectors (SRSs). Specifically, information is presented for 10 regions in South Australia, including 4 in Adelaide.
