STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW
In the March quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 0.9%, the Intermediate demand index rose 1.2% and the Preliminary demand index rose 1.5%. Through the year to the March quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 2.5%, the Intermediate demand index rose 3.3% and the Preliminary demand index rose 3.5%.
The rise of 0.9% in the Final demand index in the March quarter 2014 reflected an increase of 0.7% in the prices of domestically produced products and a increase of 2.7% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+7.9%) and other agriculture (+8.0%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-6.6%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for computer and electronic equipment manufacturing (+3.5%), other transport equipment manufacturing (+4.6%) and furniture and other manufacturing (+4.8%). The depreciation of the Australian dollar against major trading currencies contributed to this rise. Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-3.1%).
The rise of 1.2% in the Intermediate demand index in the March quarter 2014 reflected an increase of 0.9% in the prices of domestically produced products and an increase of 2.8% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+7.7%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+5.7%) and printing and printing support services (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for fishing (-14.7%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+4.0%), textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+5.6%) and electrical equipment manufacturing (+6.2%). The depreciation of the Australian dollar against major trading currencies contributed to this rise. Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for basic ferrous metal product manufacturing (-13.0%) and pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-3.4%).
The rise of 1.5% in the Preliminary demand index in the March quarter 2014 reflected an increase of 1.1% in the prices of domestically produced products and an increase of 3.3% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (+8.8%), sheep, beef cattle and grain farming; and dairy cattle farming (+4.8%) and road freight transport (+1.9%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for accommodation (-0.8%). The imports component recorded rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+4.0%), textile, leather, clothing and footwear manufacturing (+5.8%) and metal ore mining (+5.2%). The depreciation of the Australian dollar against major trading currencies contributed to this rise. Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices for basic ferrous metal product manufacturing (-7.9%) and other non-metallic mineral mining and quarrying (-10.0%).
