STAGE OF PRODUCTION COMMENTARY

STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

In June quarter 2011, the final (Stage 3) index recorded an increase of 0.8%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index recorded an increase of 2.1% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index recorded an increase of 2.8%. Through the year to June quarter 2011, the final (Stage 3) index increased by 3.4%, the intermediate (Stage 2) index increased by 5.6% and the preliminary (Stage 1) index increased by 6.8%.

The increase of 0.8% in the final (Stage 3) index reflected a rise of 1.1% in the price of domestically produced items, partly offset by a fall of 1.4% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for building construction (+1.2%), petroleum refining (+11.0%) and other agriculture (+7.9%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for accommodation (–2.2%). The imports component decreased due to falls in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (–2.7%), electronic equipment manufacturing (–6.1%) and clothing manufacturing (–6.1%). Partly offsetting these price falls were rises in the prices for petroleum refining (+5.6%).

The increase of 2.1% in the intermediate (Stage 2) index reflected a rise of 1.8% in the price of domestically produced items and a rise of 4.2% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for grain, sheep, beef and dairy cattle farming (+4.9%), oil and gas extraction (+9.1%) and iron and steel manufacturing (+6.8%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for basic non–ferrous metal manufacturing (–2.3%). The imports component increased due to rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+19.8%), petroleum refining (+14.5%) and basic chemical manufacturing (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (–2.7%).

The increase of 2.8% in the preliminary (Stage 1) index reflected a rise of 2.2% in the price of domestically produced items and a rise of 7.2% in the price of imported items. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for oil and gas extraction (+9.1%) and iron and steel manufacturing (+6.8%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices received for basic non–ferrous metal manufacturing (–2.3%). The imports component increased due to rises in the prices for oil and gas extraction (+19.8%), petroleum refining (+14.4%) and basic chemical manufacturing (+5.2%). Partly offsetting these price rises were falls in the prices for industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing (–2.7%).
