UNDERLYING CONCEPTS

NAME OF THE VARIABLE

4. The name of the variable is 'Sources of cash income'. For reasons discussed in the Framework for standard cash income variables, cash income, rather than total income (including in kind receipts) is the preferred proxy measure of economic wellbeing. 'Sources of cash income' is the correct label for use in table titles, wafer titles, headings, stubs and text. In practice, 'Sources of cash income' data are seldom used in output. They are of most interest in social analysis for identifying specific sub-populations of interest, e.g. all households receiving cash income from the Disability Support Pension.

DEFINITION OF THE VARIABLE

5. The standard nominal and operational definition of 'Sources of cash income' is:

the variable that classifies sources from which persons, income units, families and households receive cash income.
Scope of the variable

6. 'Sources of cash income' applies to all persons, income units, families and households reporting a value for 'Total cash income' in surveys that ask about sources.
