Barley is predominantly grown in north western areas of the state, especially in the Wimmera and Mallee Statistical Divisions. In 2000-01, increased plantings and improved yields resulted in a significant rise in production from the previous year, to 1.7 million tonnes.

In 2000-01, of all barley produced in Victoria, 45% came from the Wimmera Statistical Division (755,900 tonnes) and 37% came from the Mallee Statistical Division (623,800 tonnes).

Preliminary data for 2001-02 indicate that area sown for Victoria has increased by 2% to 707,000 hectares; production has increased by 1% to 1.7 million tonnes.
