In current prices, the trend estimate for Australian turnover was relatively unchanged (0.0%) in March 2017 following a rise of 0.1% in February 2017 and a rise of 0.1% in January 2017.

The seasonally adjusted estimate for Australian turnover fell 0.1% in March 2017 following a fall of 0.2% in February 2017 and a rise of 0.5% in January 2017.

The original estimate for Australian turnover rose 11.0% in March 2017. The original estimate for chains and other larger retailers fell 11.6% in March 2017. The original estimate for smaller retailers rose 10.0% in March 2017.

TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY

In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the March quarter 2017 rose 0.1% following a rise of 0.7% in the December quarter 2016 and a relatively unchanged (0.0%) September quarter 2016.

In the March quarter 2017, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Food retailing (0.6%), Household goods retailing (0.4%), Other retailing (0.4%), and Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food services (0.1%). Department stores (0.0%) was relatively unchanged and Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (-1.0%) fell in the March quarter 2017.

The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover rose 0.1% in seasonally adjusted terms in the March quarter 2017.


TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE

The following states and territories rose in trend terms in March 2017: New South Wales (0.1%), Victoria (0.1%), South Australia (0.3%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.1%). The following states and territories fell in trend terms in March 2017: Queensland (-0.4%), Western Australia (-0.1%), the Northern Territory (-0.3%) and Tasmania (-0.1%).

The following states and territories fell in seasonally adjusted terms in March 2017: Queensland (-1.3%), the Northern Territory (-1.8%), South Australia (-0.1%) and Tasmania (-0.2%). The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in March 2017: Victoria (0.4%), New South Wales (0.1%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.3%) and Western Australia (0.1%).

In the March quarter 2017, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms in the following states: New South Wales (0.5%), Victoria (0.4%), South Australia (1.1%), Western Australia (0.1%) and the Australian Capital Territory (0.4%). Queensland (-1.0%), the Northern Territory (-0.6%) and Tasmania (-0.2%) fell in volume terms in the March quarter 2017.
