ANALYSIS - TOTAL RETAIL TOTAL RETAIL - QUARTERLY In volume terms, the seasonally adjusted estimate for the March quarter 2012 rose 1.8% following a rise of 0.5% in the December quarter 2011 and a rise of 0.5% in the September quarter 2011. In the March quarter 2012, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for Food retailing (2.5%), Cafes, restaurants and takeaway food retailing (3.9%), Clothing, footwear and personal accessory retailing (3.2%), Department stores (2.6%) and Other retailing (1.3%). The seasonally adjusted estimate fell in volume terms for Household goods retailing (-1.4%) in the March quarter 2012. The Implicit Price Deflator for Australian turnover fell 0.9% in seasonally adjusted terms in the March quarter 2012. TOTAL RETAIL - BY STATE The following states and territories rose in trend terms in March 2012: Queensland (0.6%), Western Australia (0.8%), Victoria (0.3%), the Australian Capital Territory (0.7%), the Northern Territory (0.3%) and Tasmania (0.1%). South Australia (0.0%) was relatively unchanged. New South Wales (-0.1%) fell in trend terms in March 2012. The following states and territories rose in seasonally adjusted terms in March 2012: New South Wales (1.2%), Victoria (1.3%), Western Australia (1.2%), South Australia (0.6%), Queensland (0.2%), the Australian Capital Territory (1.5%), Tasmania (0.5%) and the Northern Territory (0.4%). In the March quarter 2012, the seasonally adjusted estimate rose in volume terms for all states, Queensland (3.2%), Victoria (1.7%), Western Australia (3.2%), New South Wales (0.5%), the Australian Capital Territory (4.5%), South Australia (0.7%), the Northern Territory (2.4%) and Tasmania (1.2%).
