APPENDIX CHANGES TO INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION

IMPACT OF CHANGES TO INDUSTRY CLASSIFICATION

1 The statistics in this release are classified to industry in accordance with the 2006 edition of Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC06). Earlier issues of this release used the 1993 edition of the classification (ANZSIC93).

2 ANZSIC06 was developed to provide a more contemporary industrial classification system taking into account issues such as changes in the structure and composition of the economy, changing user demands and compatibility with major international classification standards. For more information about the new classification and comparability/concordance between editions, please refer to Australian and New Zealand Standard Industrial Classification (ANZSIC), 2006 (cat. no. 1292.0).

3 To facilitate comparison of R&D estimates over time, the ABS has compiled industry estimates on both ANZSIC93 and ANZSIC06 bases for the 2005-06 and 2006-07 cycles. This has been enabled through dual industry coding of businesses.

DATA AVAILABILITY

4 The 2006-07 cycle is the last for which ANZSIC93 estimates will be available, i.e. industry estimates for future cycles will be available on an ANZSIC06 basis only.

5 The table below presents summary R&D data for businesses, compiled on an ANZSIC93 basis. Data cubes accompanying this release also contain more detailed ANZSIC93 industry level estimates.
