STAGE OF PRODUCTION (SOP) OVERVIEW

n the September quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 0.2%, the Intermediate demand index fell 0.1% and the Preliminary demand index fell 0.4%. Through the year to the June quarter 2014, the Final demand index rose 1.2%, the Intermediate demand index rose 0.9% and the Preliminary demand index rose 0.6%.

The rise of 0.2% in the Final demand index in the September quarter 2014 reflected a rise of 0.2% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 0.4% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for building construction (+1.0%) and other agriculture (+3.5%). Partly offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for electricity supply; gas supply; and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (-3.6%) petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-5.6%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for pharmaceutical and medicinal product manufacturing (-3.0%) and specialised machinery and equipment manufacturing (-1.2%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for other machinery and equipment manufacturing (+4.3%).

The fall of 0.1% in the Intermediate demand index in the September quarter 2014 reflected no change in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 1.0% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded rises in the prices received for legal and accounting services (+1.9%) and employment services (+1.9%). Offsetting these rises were falls in the prices received for electricity supply; gas supply; and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (-4.6%) and oil and gas extraction (-8.3%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-5.8%) and oil and gas extraction (-2.0%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for electrical equipment manufacturing (+2.4%) and seafood processing (+5.5%).

The fall of 0.4% in the Preliminary demand index in the September quarter 2014 reflected a fall of 0.3% in the prices of domestically produced products and a fall of 1.0% in the prices of imported products. The domestic component recorded falls in the prices received for electricity supply; gas supply; and water supply, sewerage and drainage services (-4.5%) and oil and gas extraction (-8.3%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices received for employment services (+1.9%) and architectural, engineering and technical services (+1.3%). The imports component recorded falls in the prices for petroleum refining and petroleum fuel manufacturing (-5.8%) and oil and gas extraction (-2.1%). Partly offsetting these falls were rises in the prices for electrical equipment manufacturing (+1.5%) and other machinery and equipment manufacturing (+2.7%).
