AUSTRALIA/SECTOR (TREND)
In the March quarter 2010, the Private sector wage price index rose by 0.6% compared to 1.1% for the Public sector, with the All sectors index recording a quarterly movement of 0.7%. This was the fifth consecutive quarter that the All sectors quarterly movement was below 1.0%.
Public sector movements were greater than those in the Private sector for both the quarter and the year through to March quarter 2010. The difference between the Public sector through the year change (4.2%) and the Private sector through the year change (2.5%) was greater in March quarter 2010 than at any other time since the commencement of the series.
STATE/TERRITORY (ORIGINAL)
The highest quarterly movement (1.0%) was recorded by both New South Wales and Tasmania and the lowest quarterly movement (0.7%) by Victoria. Through the year increases ranged from 2.6% for South Australia to 3.6% for Tasmania.
In the Private sector, only Queensland and the Australian Capital Territory recorded a lower quarterly increase in the March quarter 2010 than in the March quarter 2009. The lowest quarterly increase in the Private sector in March quarter 2010 was jointly recorded by Victoria, Tasmania and the Australian Capital Territory (0.6%). The highest quarterly increase in the Private sector was recorded by New South Wales (1.0%).
For the third quarter in a row, Tasmania has recorded the highest through the year movement of all states and territories in the Private sector. In the March quarter 2010 the through the year movement in the Private sector for Tasmania was 3.4%. The lowest through the year movement in the Private sector in the March quarter 2010 was recorded by the Australian Capital Territory (2.2%).
Quarterly movements in the Public sector for the March quarter 2010 were greater than those in the Private sector for all states and territories with the exception of Western Australia. In the Public sector, Tasmania recorded the highest quarterly movement of all states and territories in the March quarter 2010 (1.7%) and New South Wales and Queensland both recorded the highest through the year movement (4.5%). Western Australia recorded the lowest Public sector quarterly movement (0.6%) and South Australia the lowest Public sector through the year movement (3.0%).
INDUSTRY (ORIGINAL)
In the March quarter 2010, the highest All sectors quarterly movement was recorded by Education and training (2.1%) and the lowest quarterly movement was recorded by Wholesale trade (0.2%).
Increases through the year ranged from 1.8% for Accommodation and food services to 4.8% for Electricity, gas, water and waste services. All industries with the exception of Electricity, gas, water and waste services recorded lower through the year movements in the year to March quarter 2010 than in the year to March quarter 2009.
The Private sector quarterly change for the Wholesale trade industry in the March quarter 2010 (0.2%) was the lowest quarterly change recorded by this industry since the March quarter 2003, and was the third consecutive quarter in which a movement of 0.5% or less was recorded. The Private sector through the year movement for Wholesale trade (2.1%) was the lowest through the year movement recorded by this industry since the commencement of the series.
In the Public sector, quarterly movements in the March quarter 2010 ranged from 0.4% for Health care and social assistance to 2.9% for Professional, scientific and technical services. The highest Public sector through the year movement in the March quarter 2010 was for Electricity, gas, water and waste services (5.6%) and the lowest was 4.1% for Health care and social assistance.
