Articles on Education and Training

The latest issue of Australian Social Trends (cat. no. 4102.0) was released on 10 April 2013. The following articles are of particular interest to Education and Training statistics:

The 'average' Australian

In 1911, the average Australian was a 24 year old male farmer – today, the average Australian is a 37 year old female sales assistant. In 2011, the average adult Australian had completed Year 12 and had a qualification, the most common being a Certificate (40%), and the most common field of study being Business and Management (9%).

Young adults: Then and now

Young adults are much more educated today than their counterparts from 35 years ago; and nearly twice the proportion of young adults were attending an educational institution in 2011 compared with 1976. In 1976, only 6 per cent of young adults had a bachelor degree or higher qualification. In contrast, a quarter of young adults had a bachelor degree or higher in 2011.
