Government funding for cultural activities continues to rise: ABS Total government funding for cultural activities was $5.6 billion in 2006–07, a rise of 2.6% on last year. The federal government contributed one third ($1.9 billion) state and territory governments contributed $2.6 billion and local governments, $1.1 billion. Broadcasting and film (including funding for radio and television services, film and video and multimedia) continues to be the largest recipient of funds, with funding of over $1.2 billion from federal /state governments combined. This was a 2.0% increase on 2005–06. The other major recipients were Nature parks and reserves ($1.2 billion) and Other museums ($520.2m). Libraries received $1.0 billion with more than half ($619.7m) from local government. Federal spending on cultural activities remained steady at $1.9 billion with the majority ($1.4 billion) spent on arts related activity (including broadcasting and film). State and territory governments spent $2.6 billion, a rise of 2% from last year which included $2.1 billion on Heritage related activities (including Nature parks and reserves).
