MAY KEY POINTS
TREND ESTIMATES
- Trend estimates for short-term visitor arrivals to Australia during May 2007 (480,200 movements) changed little compared with April 2007 (479,900 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.3% for March 2007 and 0.2% for April 2007.
- Currently, short-term visitor arrivals are 6.0% higher than when the series last troughed in July 2006 (453,100 movements) and 5.3% higher than in May 2006.
- During May 2007, short-term resident departures (441,700 movements) increased by 1.0% compared with April 2007 (437,400 movements). This followed monthly increases of 0.9% each for March 2007 and April 2007.
- Short-term resident departures have continued to increase since the trend break from December 2006 was introduced.
SEASONALLY ADJUSTED ESTIMATES
- Seasonally adjusted estimates for short-term visitor arrivals during May 2007 (474,300 movements) decreased by 0.3% compared with April 2007. This followed a monthly increase of 7.6% for March 2007 and a monthly decrease of 5.2% for April 2007.
- Short-term resident departures for May 2007 (442,900 movements) decreased marginally compared with April 2007 (443,200 movements). This followed monthly increases of 7.3% for March 2007 and a marginal increase for April 2007.
ORIGINAL ESTIMATES
- In original movement terms, there were 368,000 short-term visitor arrivals to Australia and 439,700 short-term resident departures from Australia during May 2007.
