NOTES

ABOUT THIS ISSUE

This issue contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex for 30 June 2001 to 30 June 2012. Estimates are provided for Statistical Areas Levels 2 to 4 (SA2s - SA4s), Greater Capital City Statistical Areas (GCCSAs), and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Estimates are also provided for Local Government Areas (LGAs) based on 2012 boundaries and Commonwealth Electoral Divisions based on 2013 boundaries.

Estimates for 30 June 2001 to 2011 for Statistical Local Areas, Statistical Subdivisions and Statistical Divisions according to the 2011 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) are also included.

The summary commentary in this issue focuses on the age and sex distribution of populations at the SA4 level and above as at 30 June 2012. All LGA, ASGS-based and ASGC-based estimates are available from the Downloads tab.

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Christmas Island and Cocos (Keeling) Islands, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES

The estimates in this issue are final for 2001 to 2011 and preliminary for 2012 (denoted 2012p).

Preliminary population estimates by age and sex for SA2s and LGAs for June 2013 are scheduled for release on 28 August 2014 in Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia, 2013 (cat. no. 3235.0).

ACCURACY OF POPULATION ESTIMATES

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using Census data, mathematical modelling and population-weighted geographical correspondences and are subject to some error. A degree of caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations.

All statistics included in the commentary for this publication have been presented as rounded values. While unrounded figures are provided in spreadsheets, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

The estimates in this issue supersede those released in previous issues of Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia. This is due to final rebasing and recasting processes. For more information, see:

This issue does not include state/territory specific commentaries, however a summary of the data is provided in the national Main Features.

A SuperTABLE data cube containing estimates for LGAs (based on 2012 boundaries) by five year age group and sex for all years from 2001 to 2012 has been included for the first time, and is available from the Downloads tab.

FUTURE CHANGES IN THIS PRODUCT

This will be the last issue to include population estimates by age and sex based on the ASGC. Sub-state population estimates from 30 June 2012 onward will only be prepared and released based at the SA2 (and above) and LGA levels.

Future issues of this product are planned to contain population estimates by age and sex for the reference year and five years ago only. The longer time series in this issue is presented to assist users in the transition from the ASGC to the ASGS.
