NOTES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This product contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex as at 30 June 2005 and 30 June 2010. The areas for which estimates are provided are Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Local Areas (SLAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs), Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs) and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2010 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC).

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island and Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS AND FUTURE RELEASES

The estimates in this product are final for 2005 and preliminary for 2010 (denoted 2010p). Preliminary total population estimates for SLAs and LGAs as at June 2011 are intended to be released on 30 March 2012 in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2010-11 (cat. no. 3218.0). For further information on the compilation and accuracy of estimates, refer to the Explanatory Notes.

ACCURACY

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are updated from 2006 census data using mathematical models and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations.

In commentary based on statistics in this publication, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in the spreadsheets in order to facilitate calculations of sums, rates and percentages, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.

FUTURE CHANGES IN THIS PRODUCT

From 30 June 2011, the ABS will be replacing the nation's official statistical geography, the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC) with the new Australian Statistical Geography Standard (ASGS). Sub-state population estimates from 30 June 2012 will no longer be prepared or released at the SLA level, but instead at the SA2 level. LGA estimates will continue to be prepared and released. For more information please see: ASGS and the availability of sub-state population estimates.
