NOTES

ABOUT THIS PUBLICATION

This product contains estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex as at 30 June 2007. The areas for which estimates are provided are Local Government Areas (LGAs), Statistical Local Areas (SLAs), Statistical Divisions (SDs) and Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs) and states and territories of Australia, according to the 2007 edition of the Australian Standard Geographical Classification (ASGC).

The total population of the Other Territories, namely Jervis Bay Territory, Territory of Christmas Island, Territory of Cocos (Keeling) Islands and the Off-Shore Areas & Migratory SLA, is included in all references to the total population of Australia. However, the Other Territories are excluded from commentary about the states and territories of Australia.

ERP STATUS

The estimates in this product are preliminary for 2007, based on the final 2006 Census-based estimates. For further information on the compilation and accuracy of estimates, refer to the Explanatory Notes.

The estimates for total resident populations in SLAs and LGAs as at 30 June 2007 that are available in this product differ from the preliminary estimates that were released in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 2006-07 (cat. no. 3218.0) on 31 March 2008. Those earlier estimates were based on preliminary, rather than final, 2006 Census-based estimates.

The final 2006 Census-based estimates of total resident populations in SLAs and LGAs for June 2002 through to June 2006 were also released on 19 August 2008, as additional data cubes in Regional Population Growth, Australia, 1996 to 2006 (cat. no. 3218.0). Information about the differences between the preliminary and final 2006 Census-based estimates is provided in the Explanatory Notes in the Excel data cubes that were added to that product on that date, and in a Technical Note in Experimental Estimates of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, June 2006 (cat. no. 3238.0.55.001), which was also released on 19 August 2008. A Supertable data cube containing final estimates of the resident population by age (in five-year age groups up to 85 and over) and sex as at 30 June 1996, 2001 and 2006 for SLAs and LGAs has also been added to Population by Age and Sex, Australia, 2006 (cat. no. 3235.0).

ACCURACY

It is important to recognise that sub-state/territory population estimates in this product are produced using 2006 census data and mathematical models and are subject to error. Caution should be exercised when using the estimates, especially for areas with very small populations.

In commentary based on statistics in this publication, it is recommended that the relevant statistics be rounded. While unrounded figures are provided in the spreadsheets in order to facilitate calculations of sums, rates and percentages, accuracy to the last digit is not claimed and should not be assumed. No reliance should be placed on statistics with small values.

CHANGES IN THIS ISSUE

This issue has been renamed from Population by Age and Sex, Australia to Population by Age and Sex, Regions of Australia. The product's catalogue number has remained the same (cat. no. 3235.0).
