Previously: Regional Population Growth, Australia and New Zealand (ISSN: 1321-179X) Highlights population growth or decline in Local Government Areas (LGAs) in Australia. Estimated resident population and average annual growth rates for each LGA, Statistical Division (SD) and Statistical District in Australia are included. For the Northern Territory and Australian Capital Territory, Statistical Subdivisions (SSDs) are also included. Commentary is provided on population change at various geographic levels. Estimates for Statistical Local Areas (SLAs) and SSDs in Australia are available in electronic products accompanying this release. The estimates in the initial release of this publication are preliminary for June 2006, based on the results of the 2006 Census of Population and Housing (known as 'preliminary rebased' estimates) and final for June 2001 and June 1996. On 1 October 2007, additional data will be released with this product. At that time, spreadsheets and a data cube containing estimates for all years from June 1996 to June 2006 will be added to the Details tab of this product on the ABS web site. Those estimates will be preliminary rebased for June 2002 to June 2006 and final for June 1996 to June 2001. The final 2006 Census-based SLA and LGA estimates for June 2002 to June 2006 will be released in August 2008 in Population Growth and Distribution, Australia (cat. no. 2035.0). Preliminary rebased population estimates for 30 June 2006, by sex and five-year age groups, are in Population by Age and Sex, Australia, 2006 (cat.no. 3235.0).
