To record demographic, administrative and clinical data about patients admitted to public and private hospitals in South Australia.
The Integrated South Australian Integrated Activity Collection (ISAAC) contains state-wide data capturing information about patients separated (discharged) from public and private hospitals. It provides SA Health with the information resources necessary to effectively fund, organise, evaluate, and plan health services in South Australia. ISAAC data also allows SA Health to meet national obligations through annual submissions to the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). ISAAC forms part of the Admitted Patient Care National Minimum Data Set through submission to AIHW.
Patients who normally reside outside of SA are counted as part of the collection. The ISAAC collection is refreshed every month with data provided by hospitals and is used for departmental, state and commonwealth reporting purposes.
Data is not published for general public access. For data requests involving research, prior approval will need to be obtained from the Department's Human Research and Ethics Committee.
DEFINITION OF FAMILY AND DOMESTIC VIOLENCE
No specific definition of family and domestic violence is used within this collection. Family and domestic violence is indicated by use of clinical codes within the patient record. Relies on the judgement of clinical staff who treat patients.
Aspects of family and domestic violence captured in the data are:
RELATIONSHIP TO DEFINING THE DATA CHALLENGE FOR FAMILY, DOMESTIC AND SEXUAL VIOLENCE (cat. no. 4529.0)
The summary table below is designed to indicate the amount of information available for each of the six elements outlined in Defining the Data Challenge for Family, Domestic and Sexual Violence, 2013 (cat. no. 4529.0). This is a subjective assessment made by the ABS about the data collected and is not an indication of data quality.
The following tables provide a detailed analysis of the availability of specified data elements in the data source. The data items have been grouped into four counting units:
3. Incident/Event; and
Tables are absent from the entry in cases where the data source contains no data items which relate to the particular counting unit/s.
Please note: This data source does not contain any data items relevant to this counting unit.
Hospitals provide monthly extracts of data on patients discharged from hospital to a central database managed by SA Health. Demographic data is collected by administrative staff in hospitals. Doctors and nurses record information on diagnoses and procedures as text in medical records. The text is translated into codes, and the codes are included in the monthly extracts.
SCOPE / TARGET POPULATION
All people admitted to public and private hospitals in South Australia.
Clinicians may not identify injuries as family and domestic violence related unless there is clear evidence, so the number of family and domestic violence related hospital admissions is likely to be understated in this collection.
