This publication presents nationally comparable statistics on federal defendants finalised in the Higher (Supreme and Intermediate), Magistrates' and Children's Courts within Australia for the period 1 July 2014 to 30 June 2015. Federal Defendants include persons or organisations charged with at least one offence against commonwealth legislation within the reference period. The statistics are based on administrative records held by state and territory agencies responsible for courts administration and describe the characteristics of federal defendants, including information on offences, case outcomes and sentences associated with those defendants. Selected time series data are also included where available.

Publication tables

For the 2013-14 issue of this publication, data on federal offences were included as a supplementary release to the initial release of the publication. This supplementary release included data on federal offences presented by the Australian and New Zealand Standard Offence Classification (ANZSOC) as well by an alternative grouping (Federal offence group) created to compile groups of commonwealth offences of a particular interest to users based on Act and Section information. It also included an additional three tables showing federal defendants presented by the federal offence group for the first time. All tables that were published in the 2013-14 supplementary release are included in the 2014-15 issue of the publication.

In addition, the publication tables are accompanied by a guide to finding Federal Defendants data in the publication tables in the form of an Excel spreadsheet that allows the user to filter which tables include the data items that are of interest. This guide is available in the Downloads tab.
