RESPIRATORY DISEASES (J00-J99)

Diseases of the Respiratory System (J00-J99) were the underlying cause of death for 245 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons in 2014 and accounted for 9.0% of deaths.

Chronic lower respiratory diseases (J40-J47) were the most common respiratory diseases, causing 177 deaths of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander persons. Within this group, Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (J44) was the greatest contributor. The age-standardised death rate for Chronic lower respiratory diseases was three times higher (rate ratio of 3.0) for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians compared with non-Indigenous Australians (85.2 per 100,000 and 28.1 per 100,000, respectively).
