ALWOS and REACS: Informing the nation

The Rural Environment and Agriculture Statistics Branch (REASB) is busy preparing for two large collections due to hit the field next year.

The Agricultural Land and Water Ownership Survey (ALWOS) is a collection that was first undertaken in 2011 to address the lack of information available on foreign ownership of agricultural businesses, including land and water entitlements for agricultural use.

The REASB will be undertaking two further standalone ALWOS collections in 2013 and 2018 and two supplementary surveys to the next two Agricultural Censuses (in respect of 30 June 2016 and 30 June 2021). The next ALWOS collection is currently in set-up phase and will be despatched in August 2013. Results will come out in early 2014.

An exciting development this year is the substantial work on the Survey Program Review (SPR) that REASB team, Strategic Directions, have been undertaking. From this review, REASB has produced a core set of agricultural commodities and land management practices for collection across the next five years.

In line with this review the REASB will conduct the Rural Environment and Agricultural Commodities Survey (REACS). REACS will collect data on broadacre crops, livestock, horticultural products, hay and silage, crop and pasture management, irrigation, and water use and farm management.

The next REACS collection is currently in form design phase, with the form due for despatch in late June 2013. Preliminary estimates will come out in 2013, with final results of this survey coming out early 2014.
