Information about agricultural commodities produced on Australian farms was collected by the ABS as part of the 2011-12 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS).


On 31 May 2013, the ABS released a publication called Agricultural Commodities, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 7121.0).


  • Over half of the total land area of Australia is used for agriculture
  • Tasmania has been traditionally known as the "Apple Isle" however in 2011-12, Victoria produced five times more apples than Tasmania
  • The 2011-12 canola crop was the largest on record at 3.4 million tonnes
  • The cotton crop of 2011-12 was also a record at 973,000 tonnes
  • Wheat production in 2011-12 increased by 9% over the previous year, to 29.9 million tonnes
  • The total number of meat cattle in Australia was 25.7 million head
