WHAT'S NEW?

Welcome to the latest edition of Australian Labour Market Statistics (cat. no. 6105.0), a publication designed to help you stay informed about key labour market measures and the latest developments in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) labour statistics program. Each edition contains a summary of key labour market measures with both the latest key figures and a range of time series graphs.

For some of you this may be the first look at our redesigned Australian Labour Market Statistics (cat. no. 6105.0). You can find details on what has changed and why in Changes in Australian Labour Market Statistics.

WHAT'S IN THIS ISSUE?

This edition highlights some recent developments, and current reviews of the Labour Force Survey and the labour household survey program, including:

  • Review of the labour household survey program;
  • Review of the labour force survey outputs;
  • Review of Topics @ a glance - Labour;
  • The ABS Labour Statistics Advisory Meeting; and
  • Recent ABS statistical releases

See the Recent Developments, Current Activities and Find Out More pages for more details on these developments.

Our feature article focuses on aggregate monthly hours worked by States and Territories. This is a new series which was introduced in Labour Force, Australia, November 2010 (cat. no. 6202.0). The article compares the growth in aggregate monthly hours worked of each state and territory over the past 32 years. How have aggregate hours worked for each state and territory changed over time? What happened during the recent economic downturn?

Our thoughts are particularly with those who have been affected by natural disasters this year. For a labour market statistics perspective Impacts of Natural Disaster on the Labour Force Survey provides a number of links to help direct you to the most up to date details on the impacts of the Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi on the Labour Force Survey and other ABS collections.

In February, the ABS launched the "ABS Presents..." video series. The series explains statistical concepts and methods, as well as showcasing new products. In the first series are two videos relating to labour statistics:
  • "More Than Just Unemployed"; and
  • "Are Young People Earning or Learning?"
