CULTURAL FUNDING BY GOVERNMENT

This report presents an overview of expenditure on cultural activities funded by the South Australian Government. The data used in this report are available in the data cube for South Australia attached to Cultural Funding by Government, Australia, 2011-12 (cat. no. 4183.0) on the ABS website.

In 2011-12, the estimate of cultural expenditure funded by the South Australian Government was $262.1m or 8% of the total cultural expenditure funded by state and territory governments. This was a fall of 12% from $296.3m in 2010-11. Recurrent expenses accounted for 88% of South Australian Government cultural expenditure. The estimate of per person expenditure by the South Australian Government was $159.20.

The total cultural expenditure funded by the South Australian Government has fluctuated over the last five years with the highest estimate of $296.3m recorded in 2010-11. The estimate of expenditure in 2011-12 was 5% higher than the estimate in 2007-08 ($262.1m and $251.0m respectively).

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of South Australian Government funds on Heritage activities fell 8% to $168.8m. Contributing to this fall was a 16% decrease in recurrent expenditure on Environmental heritage, from $120.3m in 2010-11 to $100.7m in 2011-12.

In 2011-12, the estimate of expenditure of South Australian Government funds for Arts activities fell by 18% to $93.3m. The main driver of this movement was the Film and video production and distribution category where expenditure on capital projects fell from $31.3m in 2010-11 to $7.1m in 2011-12. Expenditure on Other arts rose 12% to $30.5m accounting for 33% of expenditure on all Arts activities.
