RECORDED CRIME - OFFENDERS, 2013-14 - TASMANIA

TOTAL OFFENDERS

  • In 2013-14, there were 10,427 offenders in Tasmania, which represented a decrease of 9% (or 1,035 offenders) from 2012-13.
  • The (crude) offender rate decreased by 9% from 2,550 in 2012-13 to 2,313 offenders per 100,000 persons aged 10 years and over in 2013-14.

SEX

Between 2012-13 and 2013-14:
  • The number of male offenders decreased by 9% (or 809 offenders) to 8,180; and
  • The number of female offenders decreased by 9% (or 228 offenders) to 2,246.

AGE

Between 2012-13 and 2013-14:
  • The median age of offenders remained at 26 years; and
  • The number of youth offenders decreased by 13% (or 391 offenders) from 2,904 to 2,513.

PRINCIPAL OFFENCE

In 2013-14, the five most common principal offences in Tasmania were:
  • Public order offences (3,079 offenders or 30% of the total);
  • Acts intended to cause injury (1,727 offenders or 17% of the total);
  • Illicit drug offences (1,347 offenders or 13% of the total);
  • Miscellaneous offences (1,095 offenders or 11% of the total); and
  • Theft (1,005 offenders or 10% of the total).

REPEAT OFFENDERS

In 2013-14, 22% of offenders were proceeded against on two or more separate occasions within the year.

POLICE PROCEEDINGS

In 2013-14 the total number of police proceedings decreased by 11% (or 1,837 proceedings) from 2012-13.
  • Court actions decreased by 6% (or 547 proceedings). Acts indented to cause injury was the most common offence proceeded against by court actions, accounting for 22% of all court actions (or 1,958 proceedings).
  • Non-court actions decreased by 18% (or 1,288 proceedings). Public order offences was the most common offence proceeded against by non-court actions, accounting for 52% of all non-court actions (or 3,078 proceedings).

OTHER KEY POINTS

In 2013-14, Tasmania had:
  • The largest percentage decrease in offenders (9%, or 1,035 offenders) from 2012-13;
  • The largest percentage decrease in non-court actions, (18%, or 1,288 proceedings) from 2012-13; and
  • The second highest proportion of offenders with a principal offence of Public order offences (30%, or 3,079 offenders), after the Northern Territory (36%, or 4,676 offenders).
