COUNTRY OF BIRTH

At 30 June 2013, 81% (24,970) of all prisoners (sentenced and unsentenced) were born in Australia. This was followed by New Zealand (3% or 883 prisoners), Vietnam (2% or 735 prisoners) and the United Kingdom (2% or 537 prisoners). (Table 6)

Prisoners born in Sudan had the highest imprisonment rate (582 prisoners per 100,000 adult population born in Sudan), followed by prisoners born in Samoa (501 prisoners per 100,000 adult population born in Samoa). (Table 23)
