DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION, EMPLOYMENT AND WORKPLACE RELATIONS (DEEWR)

NAME OF COLLECTION

Higher Education Statistics Collection

OVERVIEW

The Higher Education Group of the Commonwealth Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR) is responsible for the collection and dissemination of statistics relating to the provision of higher education in all Australian institutions where funding is provided by the Australian Government.

DEEWR's Higher Education Group manages a comprehensive set of statistics collections referred to as the Higher Education Statistics Collection. Under subsection 19-70(1) of the Higher Education Support Act 2003, higher education providers are required to provide statistical and other information to DEEWR.

Data included in the Higher Education Statistics Collection relate to:

  • courses conducted by higher education institutions
  • numbers and characteristics of students undertaking courses
  • student load
  • completion of units of study and courses
  • students' liabilities under the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS)
  • numbers and characteristics of staff in higher education institutions
  • income and expenditure for higher education institutions
  • the educational profiles of higher education institutions

The data are widely used by DEEWR, other Commonwealth and state/territory agencies, higher education institutions, researchers, journalists, unions and individual members of the public.

SCOPE

Since 2007 all higher education providers are required to provide statistical data to DEEWR. Publications contain details of special cases relating to providers and students enrolled in more than one course or undertaking 'cross-provider programmes'.

The Higher Education Statistics Collections include data on students, staff and finance.

The Student Collections, for example, contain statistics relating to students enrolled in higher education courses in each higher education provider. Data items include:

  • nationality
  • age
  • gender
  • prior education
  • country of birth
  • location of residence
  • Aboriginality
  • other personal characteristics
  • liabilities through the Higher Education Contribution Scheme (HECS)
  • the number and characteristics of students completing award courses and types of courses completed

GEOGRAPHIC DETAIL
  • Australia
  • States and Territories

AVAILABILITY OF DATA AND PUBLICATIONS

DEEWR's Higher Education Group, through its Statistics Unit, disseminates data from the collections through statistics publications, datasets, tabulations, extracts and analyses prepared for clients. Time series data are available back to 1949 in some cases.

In addition, many reports and monographs produced by DEEWR and other agencies contain data from the collection. The ABS, for example, publishes data from the collections in Year Book Australia and various state year books.
