NAME OF COLLECTION

Cultural Participation Survey

OVERVIEW

The Cultural Participation Survey is a newly developed survey being collected for the first time in 2010-11. The survey collects information about Australian's participation in selected arts and cultural activities. This includes asking people about the type of cultural activities they undertook, the number of hours per week they were involved in cultural activities, whether they were paid, their reasons for participating and any barriers faced to undertaking more cultural activities. It is being collected as part of the Multipurpose Household Survey program. It is anticipated that data from this survey will be available for release in early 2012.

The purpose of the survey is to provide information relating to participation in arts and culture activities that will assist governments when developing policies and funding programs in relation to the arts and culture sectors. This includes determining trends in participation that assist with the development of strategies to encourage and promote equal access for all persons regardless of where they live and their socio-economic background.

Principal users of the data are expected to be the Cultural Ministers' Council Statistics Working Group, the Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet, State/Territory Arts departments, the Australia Council for the Arts and arts and culture researchers.

The Cultural Participation Survey collects data that are capable of being cross classified with Data Items Relevant to Migrants and Ethnicity.
