NAME OF COLLECTION

National (insulin-treated) Diabetes Register (NDR)

OVERVIEW

The National (insulin-treated) Diabetes Register (NDR) is an ongoing database that is the responsibility of the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare (AIHW). It collects information about people who use insulin as part of their treatment for diabetes.

The main objectives of the NDR are to:

    • collect information about new cases of insulin-treated diabetes;
    • where possible and appropriate, provide a sampling frame for scientifically valid and ethically approved epidemiological and clinical studies of insulin-treated diabetes;
    • monitor and report on the incidence of insulin-treated diabetes;
    • provide information to health service providers and planners at Commonwealth, state and territory and local levels; and
    • assist in national diabetes monitoring.

Data are provided by the National Diabetes Services Scheme, administered by Diabetes Australia, and the Australasian Paediatric Endocrine Group who collect information about children with diabetes.

SCOPE

The NDR includes people who began using insulin for management of diabetes from 1 January 1999. These include people with type 1 diabetes and those using insulin to manage type 2, gestational and other forms of diabetes.
