SOUTH AUSTRALIAN NON-GOVERNMENT SCHOOLS SECRETARIAT

NAME OF COLLECTION

Non-Government Schools in South Australia (NGSS) - Census and Needs Information

OVERVIEW

The Non-Government Schools Secretariat (NGSS) is an advisory and administrative unit attached to the South Australian Government Office of the Minister for Education and Children's Services. The NGSS and its members have responsibilities for the planning, registration and funding of non-government schools, and service several committees and boards which support South Australia's non-government and ethnic schools, including the Advisory Committee on Non-Government Schools (ACNGS).

The ACNGS conducts two censuses of enrolled students annually (February and August). Non-government schools are also required to supply the ACNGS (annually) with information about the needs of their students and of the school. This information is then used to determine needs funding for each school.

Data items relating to migrants and ethnicity include language background and overseas students.

SCOPE

All registered non-government schools provide hard copy data to the NGSS via its various committees and boards.

DATA DETAIL

The following data items are collected from registered non-government schools via census or needs information:

  • The number of students with a language background other than English
  • The number of full fee paying overseas students attending (by sex)
Note: In order to enrol full fee paying overseas students each non-government school must be registered with the NGSS.
  • The number of students enrolled
  • Number of students with special learning needs
  • Sex (student)
  • Year level enrolments for primary years (Reception - 7)
  • Year level enrolments for secondary years (8-12+)
  • Number of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students attending each school
  • Number of students from low income families (eligible for government’s School Card funding) attending each school

No age-specific information is collected from schools, only school year levels.

Data for non-government schools can be broken down into primary, secondary, both or special schools and country or metropolitan schools.

No standard statistical classifications are used in this collection.

GEOGRAPHIC DETAIL

All registered South Australian non-government schools.

AVAILABILITY OF DATA AND PUBLICATIONS

As an advisory committee to the Minister for Education and Children's Services the ACNGS reports formally to the Minister through the publication of an Annual Report at the end of each school year. Enrolment and needs funding information for each school is presented in Annual Reports as tables. Annual Reports can be downloaded from the Non-Government Schools Secretariat website.

Limited further information drawn from census and needs return can be negotiated on a request basis. No specific details about any school (other than that which appears in the Annual Report) will be provided. Information about any particular non-government school or system of schools would need to be obtained from the particular school/system of interest. A list of school contact addresses and personnel can be provided by the NGSS.

NGSS staff store and collate data using Microsoft Access.
