NAME OF COLLECTION

Victorian Government Schools’ Newly Arrived English as a Second Language (ESL) Students Data Collection

OVERVIEW

In Victorian government schools, almost 25 per cent of the population is from language backgrounds other than English. The provision of appropriate educational support, particularly English as a Second Language (ESL) programs, is essential.

The Newly Arrived ESL Students data is collected by the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development from Victorian government schools concerning newly arrived ESL students for the purposes of annual reporting, program support and operational funding. Currently, the collection is conducted twice a year within the following periods:

Period A: 1 November of the previous year to 30 June of the current year

Period B: 1 July of the current year to 31 October of the current year

This data is collected electronically using CASES21. Each year a Circular is distributed to schools giving further information on these collections.
Historical data is available from 1997 to 2009.

SCOPE

All government schools in Victoria, approximately 1,600 schools.
