Queenslanders Move House to Live in a Better Area: ABS Wanting to live in a better area was the most popular reason given by Queensland households who had moved in the last three years, according to figures released today by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). More than one in five households (22%) moved to live in a better area for lifestyle reasons, or to move to a safer/more attractive neighbourhood, or to move after retirement. The second most popular reason given for moving was the unsuitability of the previous home due to its condition, size or type (17% of moving households). One in ten moving households (10%) moved due to the loss of a job or to improve employment prospects. One-third of all Queensland households (nearly 444,000 households) moved house in the last three years. The most common reasons Queensland householders gave for not moving were affordability of a new home (3% of households or 44,000 households) and the effort involved in moving (2% or 25,900). The survey also found that one in 14 homes had a modification for older or disabled people. The most common modifications were handgrab rails (76% of modifications) and changes to the toilet, bath or laundry (38%).
