APPENDIX 6: INCOME DECILES
The household income deciles were determined from the Australian Health Survey (AHS) larger Core sample (that is, National Health Survey (NHS) and National Nutrition and Physical Activity Survey (NNPAS) samples) comprising approximately 25,000 households. Personal income deciles were calculated using person weighted data from only the NHS sample and is only available on the NATSIHS data file. Thus, these deciles are representative of Australian income deciles rather than Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander income deciles. As a result, the even 10% deciles will not occur in the AATSIHS population due to the different demographics of the sample compared to that of the combined NHS and NNPAS sample. However, this classification of income is designed to support Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander comparisons to the non-Indigenous population. Furthermore, the AHS deciles were adjusted for Consumer Price Index (CPI) increases between the 2011-2012 enumeration period of the NHS and NNPAS and the 2012-13 enumeration period of AATSIHS. These adjusted deciles were then applied to the NATSIHS, NATSINPAS and Core populations. For details on how the original deciles were derived, refer to the Australian Health Survey: Users' Guide, 2011-13 (cat. no 4363.0.55.001).
The dollar amounts contained in each decile are shown in the following table:
