70 million hectares of land re-vegetated The Australia Bureau of Statistics (ABS) has released today a report for the first time showing that farmers re-vegetated nearly 70 million hectares of land, this was mainly for livestock production in 2011-12. ABS Director of the Rural Environment and Agricultural Statistics Branch, Helen Baird, said today’s publication revealed important information about contemporary land management practices undertaken on Australia’s farms. “Although the ABS has published farm land management statistics in the past, this is by far the most comprehensive stocktake of these practices to date,” Ms Baird said. "We found that 3.7 million hectares of agricultural land had soil enhancers applied to improve the soil, this was mostly in Western Australia. “The most agricultural businesses managing feral camels were in the centre of Australia, whilst most feral water buffalo management was in the north," she said. The publication also includes information on fertiliser use, livestock, crop and pasture management as well as more unique topics such as feral animal management practices. The data will be used in conjunction with other information to assist with developing and implementing policies and programs on agricultural land management practices and decision making in relation to the Australian Governments’ Carbon Farming Initiative (CFI).
