Improving outcomes in schooling and educational attainment have been incorporated as performance targets in the National Disability Strategy3. In relation to education, improvements in schooling and higher educational attainment should underpin improvements in a range of other key areas such as economic participation, social inclusion and mental wellbeing.
The fact that many young people leave school earlier than the age mandated by state and territory legislation, and that others do not go on to attain higher education, has implications for their long term employment prospects. However, post school training is not necessarily a panacea for unemployment as it is evident that people with disabilities who gain certificates do not experience the same employment outcomes as people with no disability who hold the same qualifications. It is possible that greater incentives to employ people with disabilities would help to improve their rate of economic participation in society.
