The CURFs and accompanying Technical Manual are expected to be released early in 2009.

The publication, National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing: Summary of Results, 2007 (cat no. 4326.0), presents a summary of findings from the survey at the national level. The publication was released in October 2008 and is available free-of-charge from the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>. An electronic version of the publication tables in spreadsheet format was released with the summary publication. The spreadsheets also provide the proportions and related relative standard errors (RSEs) for each publication table.

Access to microdata

For users who wish to undertake more detailed analysis of the survey data, two confidentialised unit record files (CURFs) are expected to be available in early 2009. A Basic CURF will be available on CD-ROM, while an Expanded CURF (containing more detailed information than the Basic CURF) will be accessible through the ABS Remote Access Data Laboratory (RADL) system. Further information about how the CURFs can be accessed and the conditions of use will be available on the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>.

Information about the Basic and Expanded CURFs (cat. no. 4326.0.30.001) will be provided in the Technical Manual (cat. no. 4329.0).

Data available on request

Special tabulations to meet individual requirements are available on request, subject to confidentiality and sampling variability constraints. Specific tabulations are provided on a 'user pays' basis and are available in printed or electronic form. A detailed list of data items from the survey (in spreadsheet format) has been released with the Technical Manual on the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>.

For more information about the survey and associated products please contact the National Information and Referral Service:

With the release of this publication, a paper copy of the 2007 National Survey of Mental Health and Wellbeing (SMHWB) instrument has been made available on the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>.

The survey is based on the World Mental Health Survey Initiative version of the World Health Organization's (WHO) Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), version 3.0 (WMH-CIDI 3.0). The paper copy of the survey instrument represents the Computer Assisted Personal Interview (CAPI) version of the CIDI used by the ABS to collect the 2007 SMHWB.

For more information on the WMH-CIDI 3.0 see Chapter 2.

CIDI training

In order to use any version of the WHO's Composite International Diagnostic Interview (CIDI), training must be obtained through an authorised CIDI Training and Reference Centre. These Centres offer training and support for the use of the CIDI.

Australian CIDI Training and Reference Centre (TRC)

For more information on CIDI training please contact the Department of Rural and Indigenous Health at Monash University:

Paper copies

A paper copy of the survey instrument has been released with this publication and is available from the ABS website <www.abs.gov.au>. The survey instrument is provided as a reference to the 2007 SMHWB and should not be used for administering survey interviews. Please also note the above information regarding CIDI training.
