OTHER KEY RELEASES AND IMPLICATIONS

An ABS Information Paper summarising the quality assurance approach to rebasing the 2011 estimated resident population including any decisions, assumptions and statistical impacts is due to be released in July 2012. A description of the final rebasing methodology will be provided in an update of Demographic Estimates and Projections: Concepts, Sources and Methods, due for release by July 2013.

Several changes to ABS Demography statistical series will occur as a result of the rebasing on population estimates. For example, the final estimates of the population as at 30 June 2011 based on the 2011 Census will form the base population for the calculation of population projections for the total population and for the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australian population. These results will be published in Population Projections, Australia, 2011-2101 (cat. no. 3222.0) scheduled for release in late 2013 or early 2014, and Estimates and Projections, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians, 2011-2026 (cat. no. 3238.0) scheduled for release in 2014.

The availability of final population estimates based on the 2011 Census may also lead to an update of various fertility and mortality estimates if there is a large intercensal discrepancy for 2006-2011. When available, these will be published in the annual releases of Births, Australia (cat. no. 3301.0) and Deaths, Australia (cat. no. 3302.0).

An associated change with the availability of final estimates for the total Australian population by age and sex for 30 June 2011 is that these estimates will form the new 'standard population' for use in compiling age standardised death rates for mortality and other age standardised analysis. It is a convention in the ABS to use the final estimates of the total Australian population for the year ending in 1 as the standard population in these calculations so as to avoid revising the time series of age standardised rates every year. Accordingly, age standardised death rates will be updated to use the new standard population during the second half of 2013 with the first results on the new standard population in Deaths, Australia, 2013 (cat. no. 3302.0) to be released in November 2013.

The finalisation of population estimates for the 2006-2011 period will lead to the updating of historical series published in Australian Historical Population Statistics (cat. no. 3105.0.65.001). This work will be scheduled for release in 2014.
