Tasmania produces premium grass fed beef for domestic and international markets. Producing beef in one of the cleanest agricultural environments in the world gives Tasmanian farmers the opportunity to market their beef as equivalent in eating quality to 'short fed' feedlot beef.

Well over half the beef produced in Tasmania is exported, with Japan, Korea and the USA being the principal markets. In 2001, Tasmania reinforced its bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE - mad cow disease) free status. Japan imported increasing quantities of Tasmanian beef as a response to BSE scares in that country.
